Kaz Henderson, managing director of Total Media provided attendees at the second day of Music Exchange 2009 in Cape Town with practical tips for bands, musicians and artists on how to get promoted, publicised and how to create awareness for their brands. Not Just About The Music

Writing the song's the easy part. How do you get it out there? Should you just give it away since most people are going to steal it anyway? Why won’t the radio stations play it? Can a record company really help, or will they just screw you? Is your image more important than the message? Is writing about music, like Elvis Costello said, actually like dancing about architecture? And, with the industry going to hell, is it really a good time to quit the day job?
Plenty of questions and all were addressed at the inaugural Music Exchange conference held in Cape Town on 19 and 20 March. Over 50 delegates ranging from successful South African musicians past and present to an insurance salesman wanting to break into the industry, heard from an equally diverse assembly of speakers and panellists. Music Exchange 2009 fires up

South Africa's independent music summit, Music Exchange 2009 kicked off yesterday, 19 March at the Protea Hotel Victoria Junction in Cape Town featuring top local and international guest speakers from all sectors within the music industry. The aim of the event is to "exchange, share, mentor and enlighten" one another as participants that collectively represent 400 years in the industry gather under one roof. GAVIN RAJAH AGREES TO DELIVER OPENING WELCOME TO MUSIC EXCHANGE

Another big name has joined the Music Exchange conference — Gavin Rajah.
He has agreed to deliver opening welcome to Music Exchange prior to Stuart Rubin's keynote speech on Thursday 19 March 2009 at 9.45am.
Rajah is a household name in South Africa and has established himself as a brand internationally in fashion and events. But what many people don't know is that his creativity extends beyond fashion with his passion for music. - David Vodicka took a chance on Jet, and had the vision to nurture the career of Golden Globe winner Lisa Gerrard, most famous for her collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the Gladiator soundtrack.
- Peter Lacey was running Electronic Arts (EA) the African division for four years and then got involved in music and saw the Seether vision when no other record company would touch them.
- Yoel Kenan had the savvy to take a Spanish artist and relaunch his entire career in English, that being Enrique.
- Damon Forbes has sold more records outside of South Africa for Chris Letcher than in his home territory.
- Martin Myers was the youngest touring manager to leave South African shores when he toured Germany with Sipho before the wall fell in 1989.

INDEPENDENT CONFERENCE SET TO TUNE INTO SA MUSIC BUSINESS
Cape Town, 2 December 2008: Music Exchange is a two-day conference where seasoned professionals will impart their knowledge on the industry, giving know-how and empowering delegates on how to make a living out of their passion for music. Music Exchange will be held at Protea Hotel Victoria Junction, Cape Town on 19 and 20 March 2009.
Business savvy is more crucial today than ever before and the conference offers a survival kit for this highly competitive industry.
Over a dozen keynote speakers and panelists have proffered their services to the conference, including Stuart Rubin former Senior Vice President International - Commercial Marketing for Sony/BMG Music Entertainment, and Peter Theunissen, CEO, Cape Music Industry Commission. Topics to be discussed include contracts, distribution methods, publishing and promotion, whilst topics on rights and royalties will be delved into - all of which are essential elements in fast tracking to success.
