Peter Theunissen
Peter’s involvement in and around the music industry has spanned a period of 35 years. Formal entry into the industry started with the SABC, as an engineer, way back in the early 70’s. Since then Peter has been involved in virtually every aspect of the industry from setting up a distribution business servicing local musicians to being executive producer for Idols West Africa.
With his main interest being the logistical and marketing support for product, which has at its base Intellectual Property, Peter travelled extensively investigating appropriate business models in order to gain a better understanding of how to take this product to market. One of his most noteworthy achievements in this regard was, to set up the first authorised replication and distribution operation for Microsoft OEM product outside of the USA. In 1998 Peter identified a need in the South African music industry for a new business model to serve local musicians more appropriately. To this end he started a company called Bowline offering distribution and marketing support directly to local musicians and independent record companies. Bowline, with a unique service offering, very soon became the biggest single distributor of products containing locally developed IP in Africa. Bowline was responsible for launching many of to-days top artists in South Africa.
Peter is passionate about the music industry, the Western Cape and is driven by challenges with desired outcomes, which most people would deem impossible. Peter is currently contracted as the CEO of the Cape music industry commission or Cape MIC.
